Open Up Hospice Care

Saint Michael's is joining forces with national charity Hospice UK, and other hospices around the country, to launch a new campaign aimed at widening access to end of life care.

New analysis published this month by Hospice UK has found that nationally one in four families who require end of life care are not getting the support they need.

The Open Up Hospice Care campaign seeks to raise awareness among the public about the fact that hospice care is available to all people regardless of their sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability or illness.

The chances are that you know someone who needs hospice care.

Perhaps they are living with a terminal illness, and need help to live as well and as normally as they can. Or perhaps they don’t have much time left, and need help to go home from hospital to die in the place they want, with the people they most wish to have with them.

Hospices around the UK provide physical, emotional and social support to more than 200,000 people every year.

This includes children and teenagers as well as older people, whose quality of life, comfort and final days could be improved by having expert care and support from their local hospice.

However, some of those who require hospice care are not able to get the support they need, and the demand is rapidly increasing as our population ages.

As part of our new three year vision, Saint Michael's has already stated a comittment to continue to develop our services in the coming decade;  plans which, with your support, we will be able to make reality.

Over the next three years:

1.    We will help more people affected by terminal illness to live life to the full

We will do this by developing our outreach and outpatient services so we can reach more people at home. This complements the inpatient care services we already offer, should people need them.

2.    We will ensure more people with illnesses other than cancer get the care they need

It is widely accepted that people with a terminal conditions other than cancer often miss out on getting the end of life care when they need it. We are committed to extending our expertise to support more people living with illness, such heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), dementia, end stage liver disease and motor neurone disease.

3.    We will support more people from under-represented groups by breaking down the barriers that stop them from accessing care

We believe everyone should get care that is personalised and responsive to their individual needs, regardless of their age, ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or social circumstances. Over the next three years we will be taking action on inequality, helping more local people to get support that is right for them.

Support our campaign to Open Up Hospice Care today and help ensure that everyone who needs hospice care, gets hospice care.Saint Michael's would like the community to join in with the Open Up Hospice Care Campaign, by helping raise awareness about the benefits of hospice care, offering time as a volunteer or donating.

It costs Saint Michael's £5million pounds each year to provide its outstanding care and specialist services to local families living with terminal illness and bereavement. Around 80 per cent of this work is funded by our supporters and we can only care for as many people as we have the funds to help.

If you have a personal story about the care you or your family have recieved from Saint Michael's which you would be happy to share to raise awareness, please get in touch at info@saintmichaelshospice.org or call (01423) 879 687.
