One in four of our patients is cared for thanks to a gift left in a will.
Our Strategic Plan
In 2007 we were caring for around 1,200 and by 2011 we had increased this number to around 2,400 - with the achievement of our five year strategy 18 months ahead of schedule.
Saint Michael’s is a charity that is driven by local patient need and although we recognise that this is a fantastic achievement, we also know we cannot afford to stand still. Recent estimates show that two thirds of people will need palliative care in the last years of their lives. And as more people live longer with more complex terminal illnesses, we expect the need for our services to continue to rise. We are also very conscious that the majority of people approaching the end of their life would prefer to be cared for at home. But at present 60 per cent of these individuals are living the end of their lives in hospital, when there is no need.
It is clear from this picture that the world is changing around us, and not just in healthcare. Despite the relevance to us all, no other healthcare service remains so dependent on the generosity of the public. And in these tough times we predict that funding for care delivered by charities, like Saint Michael’s Hospice will only be further squeezed, putting more pressure on our fundraising.
So as the needs of local people and the funding around end of life care evolve, so we need to continue to evolve. That is why, in consultation with the people who use Saint Michael’s, we are currently developing a new strategic plan. It will set out how we intend to respond to this growing need, while continuing to improve quality, efficiency and effectiveness and increase the money we raise to fund these efforts.
