Thank you for your support for Saint Michael’s in 2013

A message from the Chief Executive of Saint Michael’s Hospice, Tony Collins:

2013 has been a pivotal year for Saint Michael’s as we took bold steps towards delivering more care to more local people; both at our hospice, in the local hospital and in people’s homes.

This record level of care was made possible by continued investment in our patient care team. The result is more experts on the ground helping with the physical, emotional, practical and spiritual challenges our patients may face. This expert care was extended by the further growth of our volunteer visitors programme, with more specially trained volunteers out and about locally visiting terminally ill people in their own homes, offering companionship and support.

During this year we also declared our aspiration to build a new inpatient unit fit for the patients of the future and began transforming Starbeck library into a new community base. This set us up to extend our special brand of hospice care still further.

As if these achievements were not enough we made this record difference with less expenditure and with growing fundraising support. The community we serve was instrumental in this success, contributing £4million towards the delivery of these enhanced services. This total included, but was not restricted to, the efforts of the 5000 participants in our lottery; the 250 people who took on a challenge- including the wonderful 11 who travelled all the way to Mount Everest; the 509 individuals who organised their own events; the 76 companies who went the extra mile; the 175 people who made gifts in memory of loved ones and the 1341 people who made donations. You truly are inspirational.

These efforts demonstrate the commitment of our community to the idea that everyone deserves quality care when illness can no longer be cured. This community stays loyal to this idea year after year and it is this loyalty that makes me optimistic that we are well positioned to respond to the increasing needs of our community with the confidence that we have the support to make this care happen.
Thank you again for your support. We wish you all a meaningful Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
