VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO SUPPORT LOCAL YOUNGSTERS

Saint Michael’s Hospice, Harrogate, is appealing for volunteers from across the district to help support children and young people who are living with grief.
Just ‘B’, Saint Michael’s specialist bereavement service, is currently looking to expand its team to be able to respond to more local children and young people who are learning to live with the death of someone significant.
The charity is looking to recruit volunteers with experience in supporting children and young people with their emotional health and wellbeing.
Saint Michael’s chief executive Tony Collins, said: “We have started to build up a wonderful team of volunteer bereavement workers supporting adults, but we know that there are many children and young people in the area who need our help and that is why we are now specifically looking for people who are interested in supporting these youngsters.
“We urge anyone with experience of providing emotional support, who is seeking a stimulating and responsible role, is able to commit to regular time-giving including in school holidays, and would like to be part of this exciting opportunity to get in touch as soon as possible.
“By giving your time you could help a child in your community to work through their grief and face the future more positively.”
The volunteer support workers will complete a ten-week training programme to help develop skills, knowledge and confidence in supporting families at an extremely difficult time in their lives.
After the training, volunteers will be expected to provide one-to-one bereavement support to a minimum of two clients.
The next programme will start Thursday March 13.
All Saint Michael’s volunteers are supervised by members of the charity’s multidisciplinary team and are thoroughly checked by the Disclosure and Barring Service.
Volunteers will be expected to commit around three hours per week to the role and full training and supervision will be provided.
The Just ‘B’ service is the only one of its kind in the Harrogate district and offers specialist support to children, young people and adults who have been bereaved, as well as information and advice for professionals working with them.
