You make the difference – National Volunteers Week 2017

As part of events during National Volunteers’ Week, 2017, Saint Michael’s Chief Executive Tony Collins had this letter published in our local newspaper

It is often said at Saint Michael’s that its volunteers are at the heart of the organisation.

Indeed, 30 years ago when Saint Michael’s was first founded, it was a small but passionate group of pioneering volunteers which paved the way for the future of Harrogate’s hospice care charity.

Now as we mark our 30th anniversary, volunteers remain involved in almost every aspect of Saint Michael’s care, services and activities.

This  Volunteers’ Week, which runs from June 1-7, I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank this dedicated army of past and present volunteers from across the district for their vital roles.

Our volunteers outnumber paid staff six to one, so their contribution to our work, supporting local people living with terminal illness and bereavement, is considerable. Their value is immeasurable and will continue to be so as we take the steps into our next decade of care.

These everyday heroes donate their valuable spare time to helping others – bringing their talents, passion, experience, enthusiasm, skills and stories to share with us and the people using our services.

In return, our volunteers tell us that they appreciate being able to make a difference to peoples’ lives; they enjoy sharing their skills and learning new ones, and above all, they like the feeling of being able to give something back to their community.

Our ability to provide, develop and improve our services over the past three decades, while providing our special brand of care, is due in no small part to the support of our volunteers:  We’d like to pay tribute to all those who have been involved over the years and those who continue to help us today.

Every hour they give means we can continue to provide even more care to even more local people living with terminal illness and bereavement, when it is most needed.

Thank you.

Tony Collins

Chief Executive, Saint Michael’s Hospice
