REWARDING WAY TO SUPPORT HOSPICE CARE CHARITY
When Harrogate builder Charlie Crosby scooped the jackpot in Saint Michael’s community lottery for the second time, he knew exactly what to do with his £1,000 windfall – he donated it to his stepson’s fundraising challenge to support the Harrogate-based hospice care charity.
Charlie’s stepson, John Greenhalgh set himself a 500 mile cycle challenge round Scotland’s coastline earlier this year to raise funds for Saint Michael’s, who cared for his mum - and Charlie’s wife – Sue, before her death eight years ago. Charlie’s generous donation boosted John’s fundraising total to almost £5,000.
Charlie has been a member of Saint Michael’s community lottery for several years, as a simple way of supporting the charity. Since then Charlie’s been lucky enough to win the £1,000 jackpot not once but twice!
“I’ve also won a couple of £10 prizes too over the years, but I always just donate them back. My wife spent the last couple of weeks at the hospice, before she died and I got a good chance to see what all the things they do there. Playing the lottery is an easy way to show my support for a fantastic cause.”
“It’s great to be able to give something back to Saint Michael’s. When I won the jackpot this time, I thought ‘you don’t miss what you’ve never had’ and I know this money will be put to really good use.”
Saint Michael’s community jackpot offers 32 people the chance to scoop a cash prize every week, for an entry fee of just £1. Funds raised by the lottery go straight to support for local people living with terminal illness and bereavement.
Chief executive of Saint Michael’s, Tony Collins, said: “This year Saint Michael’s celebrates a milestone anniversary, marking 30 years of providing care, comfort and support to thousands of local families.
“We can only do this with the support of our community and taking part in our lottery is a truly rewarding and effective way to help us care for more people.
“When you play the Saint Michael’s community jackpot, you get the chance to win every week, with a jackpot of £1,000 and 30 other cash prizes up for grabs. What is more, your weekly £1 goes straight to help provide care for our patients and their families, so whether your number comes up or not, everyone is a winner.”
