Specialised bereavement support
Harrogate schoolboy, Sam, had such a close relationship with his grandma that mum Lisa Hunter said they seemed to have their own language.
Grandma had lived the past 10 years with arthritis and tuberculosis but it was still a big shock to Lisa when she died in 2010. It was an even bigger shock for Sam.
“It was devastating for us all but it hit really hit Sam hard,” said Lisa.
“He was five at the time and they had such a special bond.”
Sam and Lisa were referred to Just ‘B’, Saint Michael’s bereavement support service, by their GP.
The family had no connection with Saint Michael’s and grandma wasn’t a patient at the hospice, but Just ‘B’ is accessible for all people across the Harrogate district regardless of personal links.
“The support helped us recover. It taught us to express our emotions openly and it meant we healed together.”
Sam added: “I still miss grandma. She used to tickle my feet when we were on the sofa.
“I never had anyone die in my family before, but I make things that are memories of grandma and everything is OK.”

How you can help
Saint Michael’s is a local charity that receives little government funding, so we rely on donations from people like you.
