Talking Spaces Counselling and Support Service

This service offers counselling to help adults who are experiencing emotional distress or poor mental health. This can include people with low self-esteem, who lack confidence or who are struggling to manage their life experiences. This service also supports people with depression and anxiety or severe and enduring conditions such as schizophrenia.

One in four people will experience some form of mental health issue during their lifetime but most are able to manage effectively with the help of their family and friends. Talking Spaces is here for the people who are not able to do this.

Services offered by Talking Spaces are free at the point of need and available to people who are 18 years old and over. Talking Spaces operates alongside Saint Michael’s Just ‘B’ Bereavement Support Service and is based at Saint Michael's@Starbeck, our Starbeck-based community hub on The Avenue. It is supported by nearly 50 volunteers and two staff.

Talking Spaces costs around £66,000 a year to run and is funded by The Big Lottery Fund and North Yorkshire County Council. Up until May 2014 the service was managed by Harrogate and Ripon Centres for Voluntary Service (HARCVS) but moved over to Saint Michael’s after both organisations agreed such a transfer would make both services more accessible, increase capacity and enhance the holistic approach available for clients.
